A ghoulish greetings to all my loyal subjects! It is I, the Boogey Spooky Prince!
As a big fan of both the Autumn and Halloween season, I thought I would share with you all some great pieces of media that are great to experience this time of year. I think you will find my creepy catalog of 7 to be dreadfully diverse with something for everyone!
Everyone knows that scary movies are meant to be watched around this time of the year - so we shall start this list off with 2 movies that I always watch once October comes around.
A lot of iconic horror movies have come out in the late 70's to early 80's, but I find this movie to have really done something unique that very few movies since have tried to do so with the same amount of success. The Thing creates a permanent feeling of worry from the first scare onwards and doesn't relent. A classic horror movie to watch at night with a friend - make sure to test each other's blood at some point while watching!
Scare rating: 8/10 - Practical effects rating: 10/10
Taika Waititi is a brilliantly funny director and actor, with this movie being a great example. This mockumentary movie is a breath of fresh air for the undead vampire genre of film, showing a realisitic portrayal of how 'out-of-touch immortal blood-drinkers' would fair in modern times. The humour is a bit quirky, but if you're laughing by the 5 minute mark, then you will still be laughing by the end-credits.
Scare rating: 4/10 - Laugh rating 9/10
If you're looking for something to binge watch or work away at rather than a 2-hour movie, I have 2 shows that deserve your attention.
The rustic autumn feeling of this Cartoon Network show is a rarity that is nothing short of enchanting. The soundtrack, voice acting and great cast help bring this simple-styled cartoon to life. Don't let the look of this show fool you - danger lurks around every corner in the woods that the two unfortunate boys wander through. Charm meets dread in this 10-episode series. Always remember to fear the unknown.
Scare rating: 6/10 - Cozy autumn vibes rating: 10/10
Less of a horror and more of a thriller drama, this old classic is highly regarded among anime veterans as an incredible story with twists and turns that keep your eyes wide with shock and terror. The series is a slow-burn, but considering how most anime and anime-horror go, this classic piece of media is quite refreshing and realistic. I even have to recommend the dub for this one if you want a great performance from the voice actors - trust me on this one.
Scare rating: 7/10 - Drama rating: 10/10
Most people can agree that horror games make for much more scary experiences than just watching a scary movie or show. Some of you may already know what 2 games I'm going to suggest...
The video says it all, but in case you didn't watch - this nazi-zombie sniper-shooter game packs a satifying punch right through the undead cranium. I highly suggest playing with a friend or two (or even three) in co-op to truly experience the guantlet of undead nazi hordes.
Scare rating: 6/10 - "Feel-good" sniper montage rating: xx_69_xx/10
I've already written a review for the game along with some fanart here:
I recommend playing the game with surround-sound headphones with minimal lighting.
Scare rating: 9.5/10 - Polish fairytale rating: perogia/10
This is a unique category and I only have one suggestion for it. Our sense of hearing is an important one, especially for horror and immersion - without video to go along with audio, our imagination puts in the work and can create a unique and very personal experience.
This 6-hour long series on YouTube is a look into the stages of dementia through the usages of audio-only stimulation. Most people I know who have gone through the entire thing have cried before the end - that's how intense this is. The fear of losing your mind and memory is one that haunts us all more than any jumpscare ever will. So far, I've only made it halfway through stage 4. It's a new form of horror to experience and the first stage of music is actually nice to listen to.
Scare rating: ???/10 - Memory rating: 0/10
